Phytotherapy is a treatment method that involves the use of plants scientifically recognized for their medicinal properties. Treatments with medicinal plants have been a part of traditional medical approaches worldwide for many years. Nowadays, phytotherapy, in conjunction with the knowledge of modern medicine, is considered a complementary form of treatment and never contradicts modern medicine. It can be used complementarily with current medical practices and, at the same time, can be an effective standalone treatment for some conditions, acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO). Research on phytotherapy has significantly increased in the last thirty years. The rapid emergence of herbal medicine in the late 1970s was primarily influenced by the occasional inadequacy of modern medicine, especially in chronic cases.
